Botnets Attack Gaming Websites

Security professionals have found a web-based ‘botnet’ those are affecting the gambling websites in countries like Russia and America. Shadowserver.org which is a watchdog group providing volunteer security professionals have traced and reported the activities of the hacker witnessed the (DDoS) Distributed Denial of Service attack on their website. According to the report last week around thirty gambling websites were reported to have attack on their website and most of them were having the Russian internet addresses. There were also some American and British websites.

Party Poker, Virgin Games, and Titan Poker are some of the websites those were attacked by botnet and it also includes some of the e-commerce websites. According to the report the hacker’s main aim is to totally disturb the website’s functioning. Some of the websites those got attacked were not able to function and also were not available.

The exact motive and the reasons of the attack are still unknown. The website of Full Tilt Poker cannot be accessed on Sundays and Mondays. Final table of the FTOPS VII Main Event had to be stopped by Full Tilt when there were at least three players left at that time the client was not able to make a connection with the servers of Full Tilt. Different chat and news websites for online gamblers noticed that various poker websites cannot be easily accessed for couple of days.

The botnet DDoS attacks might be responsible for client problems faced by Full Tilt. Mr. Andre who is the Director of Shadowserver Foundation botnet is a system of computers which performs the function of drones which is controlled by the central server. He also added that they are generally made by viruses those are harmful for the machines and then they are further employed at botnet.

According to Mr. Andre Botnet works through the command server and then gives instruction to machines that make botnet. Most of the times, the owner of the machines does not know that the machine is affected. As for the Full Tilt Poker each affected machines were told to make the requests for the website of Full Tilt Poker and the servers just could not bear this. He also said that too much requests burden the bandwidth which eventually makes the server to appear offline.

It became very difficult to stay away from the fact that DDoS attacks those are web-based. Mr. Andre said that usually DDoS attacks are managed by IRC (Internet Relay Chat) and they are easier to obstruct. As for the web botnets, obstructing them is more difficult. The botnets made the pages of Titan Poker to load irregularly. Casino City has also asked other websites those who have become the target and find out the impact of the attacks.

The Shadow Foundation successfully found the attacks made in the beginning to the server that was hosted by Layered Technologies. Now that server has been discontinued and botnet has found a new IP address. Mr. Andre said that DDoS attacks will not end and the real purpose of the botnet is to do deceit.
